Mobile Work Is Not New

One of the components of Lean Thinking is Deming’s innovative recommendation of devoting half the project team to the real problem. The other half is dedicated to tactical activities and tactical solutions, such as arranging for a new product with different components.

This simple idea is missing from most MBA and other business school curricula and, I would argue, has not been adopted as a standard and implemented with any degree of success. Over the last twenty years, the amount of business conducted on smart phones and tablet PCs has skyrocketed, but the amount of “real work” being done with them has been negligible.

The reality of mobile business work is that it’s most effectively done by people whose job descriptions aren’t “chief decision maker” and “chief customer.” Rather, their job description includes “communication specialist” and “scheduler.” The unfortunate fact is that most MBA students don’t have these skills and don’t recognize that there is a different set of skills required to address the issues of mobile business work than those required in more traditional business.

So how does a mobile-based business approach this new reality?

What it looks like in practice

One of the difficulties in mobile business is that it’s much harder to see the business through the phone than it is to see it through a desktop or laptop. The problem is that the small physical size of the phone screen (and the small physical size of the screen of the tablet computer, for that matter) requires the viewer to exert a great deal of effort to understand and comprehend the context of the image or text.
